White House moving in the right direction with Detroit - sort of

Obama came out the other day essentially telling Detroit it was his way or the highway. Great. He forced GM's CEO Rick Wagoner to resign and told both GM and Chrysler that their restructuring plans weren't up to snuff. Also good steps.

But then Obama also said he won't allow America's car manufacturers to fail. Wait, what?

He is taking a good, firm stance on Detroit, but simultaneously saying he won't allow them to go under. So what we're going to end up with is a bankrupt Detroit with the Government (read: taxpayers) footing the bill? Don't get me wrong - I'm happy that the administration rejected Detroit's plea for more money after already receiving $17.1 billion over the past few months. But if we are going to let GM and Chrysler go into bankruptcy, please don't make it the "controlled bankruptcy" Obama has said it may be.

As far as Chrysler goes, the proposed (forced) merger with Fiat may or may not work. The White House has decided Chrysler is no longer able to "Grab life by the horns" by itself, and will be cut off from taxpayer money if it fails to merge. At least Fiat is enthusiastic about it.

And one final thought here...we now have an administration that is forcing publicly owned companies to make business decisions. We have an administration that poured billions of tax-payer dollars into companies that some of us taxpayers already partially owned, and then we all watched as the stock prices tumbled. It seems like we're moving closer to a socialist administration when Obama can force CEO's to resign and companies to merge. When did that stop being the board of director's decision???
