Iran Gets Closer to Nuclear Weapons

Iran made an announcement today that they have made advances in the field of nuclear technology. Iran claims they are only planning on using nuclear power for energy purposes, but some nations are concerned that Iran may eventually produce nuclear weapons.

It wouldn't be impossible to build nuclear weapons from the technology Iran is creating to produce energy. The spent fuel from Iran's nuclear heavy-water can be used to produce plutonium, a main ingredient to nuclear warheads. This wouldn't be possible without a reprocessing plant, which Iran could create, but says it has no plans to.

The announcement of Iran's new advances came as part of their "National Day of Nuclear Technology." This is the day that marks the first uranium enrichment in the country.

Iran now has centrifuges in several different facilities, and one facility houses 7,000 centrifuges. Not only is Iran getting more centrifuges, but they are also increasing the capacity of each centrifuge by a few times what they used to hold.

Iran seems pretty obsessed with nuclear technology, which can understandably make some people a little nervous. Iran isn't known for liking the U.S., or the West in general.

The last thing we need right now is another major power in the Middle-East producing nuclear weapons. This could\ not only lead to a disastrous situation for the region, but might also spark something like another World War.

Obama has announced that he will engage in nuclear talks with Iran, but Iran has yet to accept Obama's invitation.
