Sen. Dodd's Give and Take with AIG
The Democrat-controlled House passed a bill on Thursday that takes back 90 percent of the AIG bonuses as a tax.
The bill passed with flying colors, because of the outrage of the American people. But the outrage of the American people shouldn't be used as a tool to get shaky legislation passed quickly in the House of Representatives.
Not only is AIG affected by this bill, but so is every other company that gets over $5 billion in bailout money. And if the House was able to pass this bill, what's to stop them from passing other bills that steal people's money? Whenever the country needs some extra tax revenue, the government can just pass a bill to take it.
When AIG executives accepted $165 million in bonus money, they weren't making a mistake. Just about anyone would accept millions of dollars if it was thrown in their face. The mistake came when politicians like Senator Dodd slipped amendments in previous bills that allowed these kinds of bonuses.
Don't blame the people who benefited, blame the people who allowed AIG to benefit in the first place.
Then again, it isn't just Dodd who made this terrible mistake. Dodd himself says that he was pressured by "administration officials," referring to the Obama administration. So, does this mistake go to the highest levels of our government? Wouldn't the highest levels know what they were doing? Wouldn't that make this more than a mistake, and instead make it an action with malicious intent?
If it turns out that the Obama administration was behind the bonuses, and they did it knowing full-well what would happen when the amendments were implemented, then that shows Obama is just a puppet with corporations pulling the strings.
Either way, this doesn't bode well for a Democratic administration that claimed they were going to get rid of the corporate power in Washington.
